commercial radio-Commercial stations don't have the same kind of freedom in what they play as non-commercial radio. They want to play music by musicians who are playing shows in that station's market and have national name recognition.

public service radio-The purpose of public broadcasting is to provide universal access to high quality programming. This programming is to enlighten, inform and entertain the viewing audience. Specifically, this programming often addresses topics that would go unnoticed in commercial markets.

Commercial radio airs up to 15 minutes of advertising per hour, while public radio stations typically only run 2-5 minutes of sponsor messages per hour, resulting in more listener enjoyment of programming and less channel hopping.

28/12/2022                                                         LO: to explore the format of the show and its appeals

Live Lounge appeal and format.

On BBC they protect under 18's by not swearing until 9pm this is because many younger children will not be listening to the radio at this time however more older people will be.
Also, they talk about topics such as festivals and give warnings before they start talking about things like this. However they also talk about stuff like suicide and and assault but they will warn younger people to turn off and will say how long they are going to spend on talking about the subject so people that do not feel comfortable listening can change channel before they discuss it.

the benefits of broadcasting on two channels are that it allows the musics artists to be broadcasted across two of the radio platforms meaning more publicity for them.

Rickie Hedges hosted the breakfast show at Kiss for ten years with Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom. The trio are known as Rickie, Melvin and Charlie.

Charlie hosted the breakfast show at Kiss with Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom for ten years, where they were known as Rickie, Melvin and Charlie.

Melvin Odoom is a British radio DJ and television presenter. He is best known for presenting on BBC Radio 1 alongside Rickie Haywood-Williams and Charlie Hedges.

The Live Lounge is also the name of the room in the Radio 1 studies where many performances are broadcasted live.
Artists are filmed in an intimate radio studio, acoustically, often with little production rehearsal. They normally perform one or two of their own songs and then a unique cover from an A list radio 1 artist who has had a release 6 to 9 months ago.

What is the audience appeal of the Live Lounge?
Personal identity- relate to the presenters who are a similar age, interests in music. Identify with the artist.
Information-background information about the artist, up and coming events.
Entertainment-enjoying the live music.
Social interaction- because people can share the episodes and people can talk about it after.

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience and fits to the uses and gratifications theory because it helps with personal identity because the people listening can relate to what the presenters are talking about because they are similar ages and have a similar taste in music. Also they provide background information about the artists they have on there and upcoming events that people will be interested in.They also provide very good music and have a variety of different genres that younger people are interested in that play to attract many people. They also have a good amount of social interaction so that you can discuss it with other people you know because it is likely that they listen to it as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does the live lounge appeal to the target audience meet the BBC remit?

The BBC live lounge appeals to people between the ages of 15 to 29, they get this audience by including young radio presenters which many people will find they can relate to and who also use the same vocabulary/slang as them. They ensure that they get their target audience by playing popular/trending music that many young listeners listen to and also by having new, young upcoming artists especially from the uk perform which also supports them as singers. They also appeal to the target audience by educating young people about topics like mental health and stress with exams and provide information on how to help if they can relate to what they are speaking about. The live lounge also provides lots of entertainment that young listeners will be appealed to including things like upcoming festivals and events that could be near them. The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners by providing programming for young teenagers.

1. ofcom regulates radio in the uk
2.BBC own radio one
3.public service broadcasting is programmes that are there to provide information, advice or entertainment.
4.co-operation, coreperate buisiness?

Question 2 (4)

one advantage for audiences listening to BBC 1 online are that it provides entertainment, by having upcoming artists from the uk sing live and also the average ages for the people listening to this radio are 15-29 so they play popular and trending songs that they know young people are listening to at that moment in time. They also provide lots of information online with their radio content for example they help young people who are struggling with mental health and people who are stressed with GCSE's and university they have programs and other things that could be useful to the younger generation.

Question 3 (10)

Producers of radio programmes target different audiences because they all are trying to have diversity with their station but at the same time have a certain age audience which you can then base your music and information and they type of entertainment based on the audience you are trying to attract. For example, radio one live lounge target the younger generation by having young tv presenters, who can relate to some of the listeners and also by the slang that they use for example "big up" is what many young people would recognise. Another thing that they do is they try to attract an audience in-between the ages of 15 and 29 but still try to have that diverse community of listeners by the range of different styles of music that is played on their radio. They also like to provide young listeners with stuff that could be useful to them for example how to cope with stress from uni, gcse's r just school in general and also mental health. However they do like to keep listeners updated with stuff that is going on around the world as well.

explain one way the radio stations target their audiences use the live lounge as an example to form your answer.

The live lounge targets 15-29 year old's by providing entertainment and also education, they do this by having singers come and perform live that are very popular to the age range (the live lounge used Stormzy since he was appealing to the targeted audience.) The live lounge provides education by having website links and videos to people that are dealing with exams or anxiety/depression and topics like that.

explain how and why BBC radio has to provide a wider range of content than commercial radio.Refer to the 'BBC radio 1 live lounge' in your answer

BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons
firstly radio one provides, a broad range and selection of the genre's of music since there are a broader range of people listening
this example is due to the remit in particular
we can identify this in the live lounge through,

-the song name is 'Teenage dirtbag'.

-song released in the year 2000.

-genre of teenage dirtbag is american skater-rock , pop-rock.

-the song was released in the Uk February 5th 2001.

-The song took four years to write and was born out of a dark shadow that was cast over Brendan’s childhood by a crime that happened in the woods behind his house in Northport, New York.“The narrative of Teenage Dirtbag is entirely fictionalised and only touches on some of the characters I grew up with, but my own upbringing would make for a much darker, less popular song,” says Brendan. There was a murder in my town when I was 10 and it turned out to be teenagers who were doing enormous amounts of drugs, lots of PCP and acid, anything they could get their hands on.It was a violent place I grew up in, a fishing town on the outskirts of New York. In the in the 70s and 80s a lot of fishermen there couldn’t make a good living any more so the parents were each holding down a job and barely making ends meet. There were a lot of kids with a key to the front door and no one was home. There was lots of petty crime and drugs and these kids got involved in some kind of Satan thing and they lured their friend Gary to the woods and stabbed him to death in the name of the devil

I think the purpose of 'sk8ter' boy music video was that the video also relates to the lyrics and it is a way to promote the song in general and also get more viewers. and also the singer (Avro Lavigne) is the main person featured in the video so people could see who she is and what she is like.

The purpose of 'Teenage dirtbag' music video was that it promoted the music by a cross-promotion of promoting the music video as well as their image and the lyrics itself and also it is the first single that the band had released.

Mise-en-scene includes:
-setting

-hair & makeup
-colour
-performance (positioning, facial expressions, body language)

she worn this costume because it related to her song because it was called "survivor" and she was wearing a camoflauge print two-piece and people associate camoflauge prints with the army and bravery (survivors).

in this clip mise-en-scene is included in the video with the colour pallete being red black and mainly gold and gold is known to represent wealth throughout the background but we can also seen this in the clothes they were wearing made of silk and the gold jewellery which also relates to expense and money.

Look what you made me do Taylor Swift music video represents wealth and money when she is seen lying in a modern/fancy bath full of jewellery diamonds and money and she is wearing lots of bracelets and bangles and multiple rings on every finger with red nails matching her lipstick making sure peoples attention stay on her.

in the music video 'sk8ter boy' Avril Lavigne features in her own video appearing to be emo/ punk rock with her backwards hat , dark eyeshadow and pale skin, also she wears black jewellery and very "boyish" clothing. This links to the style of the song since it is about teenagers falling in love with a boy and rejecting him despite liking him because her  mates didn't

teenagers being rebellious throughout the music video, starting off with paint cans later on smashing up cars, illegal concert.  In the background you can see tall buildings and in other parts of the video you recognise that it was made somewhere in America.
Also in this part of the video you can see multiple paint cans scattered across the front of the road with a small bmx bike behind which teenagers would have had at the time.
This image shows Avril being reckless on top of a car and singing at an illegal concert that she set up with her friends and she looks very punk rock with the outfit that she is wearing and the bracelets that are onher arm.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-this screenshot is the nerd that really likes a girl but knows she wouldn't like him back he is wearing a neeky hat making him an easy target to get bullied combined with his clothes made him a target to bully's he is seen in the hallway walking in what appears to be a school
this image is the bully's that pick on the nerd which are very stereotypical american bullies which we can tell by the jock jackets some of them are wearing and also the format in which they way they are walking.

Mise-en-scene

DO NOW
1.setting in a supermarket
2. singer in front with people behind throughout video
3.costumes , people wearing brightly coloured clothing and outfit changes throughout video very vibrant clothing, makeup and hair

Sk8er Boi

In Sk8er Boi, by Avril Lavigne,, her and the other people in the video are wearing very masculine clothes, like ties and graphic shirts. This reflects the genre because its pop/punk.

Teenage Dirtbag
In Teenage dirtbag you can tell who the 'jocks' are since they are very stereotypical and are wearing football jackets and walk around the hallway all cocky side by side.

Exam style question

The music video for Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi and Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve similar effects for example, they are both quite urban locations in america despite one being in a classic american high school, also they are both music videos that  show teenage rebellion which is used effectively because they want the theme of the music video to link with the lyrics and with the theme of the genre that it is and the style of music combined with their online image however the differences between teenage dirt bag and Sk8er boy are that Sk8er boy's style of clothing are skaters and punk and Teenage dirtbag is more nerdy and stereotypical high school outfits (like the jocks and their football jackets).

23/02/2023                             LO:to explore how camera work is used to create meaning in videos

the connotations of this setting are the colour orange seems to be a theme since the fields are orange as well as the persons hair who is stood in the centre of the image, by herself at a long shot range suggesting that she is by herself and she is isolated. Another thing we can relate the setting to is a desert because of the contrasting colours of red yellow and orange.

Shot type , Angle , Movement

establishing shot-wide or extreme wide shots of buildings or landscapes.

POV shot- give audiences a view from a character's perspective by positioning the camera right where the character's eyes would be

pan movement-you move your camera horizontally; either left to right or right to left, while its base is fixated on a certain point.

focus-pull movement-the act of changing the camera lens's focus distance to a moving subject's distance from the focal plane,

-sk8ter boy's music video is expressionistic.
-teenage dirtbags music video is a lot more naturalistic.

1.point of view shot, shown from the camera man's perspective focusing on Avril Lavigne is used to show a different point of view of the main character /singer showing that she is the key feature of the music video.

2.long shot, showing a bench with someone sat on it from a long point of view suggesting that they are alone (have no friends) since there are no other people seen in this wide camera shot.

3.mid shot of Avril Lavigne stood up on top of a car being in the centre of the shot showing that she is the main focus of the whole video, also this section of the video is taken from a higher angle to include the people in the shot that are surrounding the car that she is stood on top of.

4.mid shot from a low angle, with a naturalistic background appearing to be a school with stereotypical jocks in the centre of the camera walking in a formation with the leader infront, they used this camera shot to include all of the people into the shot.

5.this shot is an extreme close up of Avril Lavigne on her face whilst she is holding a microphone this could relate to the genre and theme of her video which is rock/punk.

The camera movement in sk8ter boy is expressionistic for example at one point in the video she is seen on top of a car with an audience surrounding her and the camerawork fits the tone of the song because it goes with the lyrics.

___________________________________________________________________________________

09/03/2023                  LO:To explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music videos

-The two types of sound are- diegetic, non-diegetic

Diegetic sounds are those from inside the world of the text (that the characters/actors can hear.)
Non-diegetic sounds are sounds outside the  film that the characters cannot hear.

in Ska8er Boy there are two diegetic sounds one is at the very beginning with paint cans .We could hear them being sprayed and thrown and the other example was the helicopter, these sounds show the performance view of the expressionistic music video and the realism of it.

Editing

-continuity
-transitions
-shot duration
-pace and rhythm
-special effects
-order of shots/shot choices

linear- scenes in chronological order with a beginning middle end with a narrative showing the story plot.
non linear-the scenes are not in chronological order, very random shots showing no story plot

both teenage dirtbag and sk8er boy are linear music videos.

Ska8er boy has a faster pace and more cuts in the music video. I think this is to do with the fact it is an expressionistic music video and shows lots of different angles of the music video also the cuts go with the beat of the music.

Teenage dirtbag has longer shots in their music video, this is to do with the fact that the video shows more of a narrative and the shot lengths go with the beat of the music.

In teenage dirtbag special effects are used,we see them when the camera is focused on the girl in multiple parts of the music video and there is slow motion being used. This is to help the narrative and get a clearer view of what is going on in the video.

Teenage dirtbag and Sk8er boy are very different music videos, we can tell this because of mise-en- scene. Ska8er boy is punk/rock and Teenage dirtbag is american/rock also we can see they aren't similar based on the costumes that are seen throughout both music videos, in teenage dirtbag there are multiple different stereotypical styles including nerds, jocks (that are wearing lettered jackets)and the popular girl however in sk8er boy Avril Lavigne and her friends are all wearing very similar clothing like baggy -shirts, denim jeans and black studded jewellery.
